On October 3rd, 2009, the 2nd Annual Jacob’s House Softball Tournament took place at the beautiful Patricia H. Birdsall Sports Park in Temecula, CA.  It was a fun day of competition and prizes.

T-shirts were given to all team players, Team Trophies and Bat Bags went to First place.  The tournament was an 8 Team Double Elimination Competitive Tournament along with an 8 Team Double Elimination Recreational Tournament.

Ron Jolivette title prior to retirement came from  Senior Architect, Healthcare Design & Construction, Facilities Design and Construction, University of California, San Diego. Secondly; Deputy Director, Office of Design and Construction, University of California, Riverside.  As an Achhitect and Construction Manager, involved for years in healthcare projects, he felt a divine calling to serve on the Jacob’s House board to assist in achieving the vision.

Dr. Laurence Bogeln background with Hospice of the Valley and the alignment of the missions of Hospice of the Valleys and Jacob’s House help to provide the support of families of patients who are experiencing serious, possibly life threatening illness or jinjury need our support.  Dr. Boggeln, “ I am humbled to contribute whatever I can to carry out these life-affirming missions.”

TEMECULA —- The nonprofit organization raising money for the construction of Jacob’s House, a home envisioned as a haven for families caring for hospital-bound family members, is looking to build on a successful 2008, board members said.

Last year, more than $20,000 was raised for the organization, which was recognized as a nonprofit corporation by the state in 2007.

In November, in the middle of a challenging fundraising environment, Jacob’s House received the largest donation in the organization’s history, $12,340 from the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association, board members said.

The association raised the money during the 2008 Food and Wine Classic, an event that will again this year be linked with Jacob’s House, said Ralph Plumb, chairman of that organization’s board of directors.

“We’d like to think of our partnership as a forward-looking one,” he said.

Some of the other fundraisers in 2008 included a charity softball game and benefits staged by area businesses.

The softball game was held in October on the birthday of the organization’s namesake, Jacob Nelson, son of Temecula City Manager Shawn Nelson.

Jacob Nelson, 24, died in 2006 from injuries he sustained in a car accident.

Seven days later, Shawn Nelson, still grieving, made a scheduled appearance at a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House.

Nelson was speaking at the event because his family had stayed in a Ronald McDonald House while their daughter was recuperating in a hospital following an accident in the late 1990s.

Ronald McDonald Houses are designed to offer families a temporary residence where members can sleep, eat and get counseling at little or no cost while their child is hospitalized.

Jacob’s House will be more inclusive, board members said, offering space to people who have family members of any age in the hospital.

While speaking at the Ronald McDonald House fundraiser, Nelson used the podium to issue a call for a similar type of facility in Temecula.

That call was answered by Southwest County leaders, who have teamed up to make the idea a bricks-and-mortar reality.

Plumb said the nonprofit organization plans to build on the momentum of 2008 by scheduling a new slate of fundraising events and rolling out a monthly pledge program.

The events will be similar in size and scope, Plumb said, to last year’s Food and Wine Classic and the softball game.

While raising money, the board also will be working to identify a location for the house.

An ideal spot would be somewhere close to the land on Temecula Parkway that has been slated for a new hospital, a project that is still held up in the state’s review process.

Plumb said architectural plans will be drawn up after a site is selected.

Some estimates have pegged the cost of Jacob’s House at around $5 million, but Plumb said the nonprofit organization’s committee members and network of supporters will have a better idea of the eventual cost after the site and the renderings are complete.

“Those are very important milestones to reach,” he said.

Linda Mejia, board secretary, said all of the board members share Plumb’s dedication and they are committed to building on the success of last year.

“Our eyes are focused on the goal,” she said.

On Thursday night, Mejia said, some of the Jacob’s House board members were scheduled to gather at a Murrieta woman’s home for coffee and dessert to launch the nonprofit organization’s new Key Partner program.

Mejia said the program will help raise money and awareness of Jacob’s House by tapping into the social connections of members of the community who sign up to be partners.

She said Jacob’s House leaders are hoping to sign up 500 partners in the Temecula-Murrieta area in 2009. Eventually, those partners will help sign up thousands of new partners, broadening the network of people working toward raising money for the facility.

The “key” part of the name symbolizes the key that will one day be used to open up Jacob’s House, Mejia said.

The date of October 11 has been chosen in memory of Jacob Nelson’s birthday.

“He loved sports, people, and this community. We couldn’t think of anything more fitting to do on his birthday,” says Jacob’s parents, Shawn and Stephanie Nelson.

Temecula California — The Wiens Family Cellars in Temecula hosted the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association Food & Wine Classic on September 6 which proved to be a great opportunity to sample exceptional food from Temecula Valley chefs paired with award-winning wines from Temecula wineries and help a great cause all at the same time.

The event was billed as an opportunity to meet the people who made the wine, cooked the food, enjoy fine entertainment and take part in a silent auction as guests sampled the best the region has to offer.

A majority of the proceeds from the event will go towards Jacob’s House, a temporary residence that is planned near a proposed hospital in the southern part of Temecula where family members of ill children can sleep, eat and find support from others.

The facility will be named after Jacob Nelson, son of Temecula City manager Shawn Nelson, who died in an automobile accident in October 2006 at the age of 24. You can get more information and make a donation at: http://www.jacobshousetemecula.org/

According to organizers of the event, this is the first time that the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association has reached out to help a community-based organization.
